The third annual “Watch the Glow of the Setting Sun on the Red Brick Brewery” event started in Swede Hollow Park on top of “Swede Hollow Henge” (the stones on the rise between the Drewry Lane Tunnel) around 6:00 p.m on September 28th. About thirty Friends of Swede Hollow members, neighbors, former Hamm’s brewery workers, former Swede Hollow residents, and others attended the event.
Naomi Chu, Executive Director of Asian Pacific Culture Center, started off the evening with information about their wonderful plans to renovate some of the Hamm’s Brewery buildings into their culture center. The architect for the project was on hand to talk about the plans. Everyone was very impressed with the culture center and look forward to having them in the Hamm’s Brewery buildings.
The celebration picnic followed the sun setting. The evening was filled with great Brewery and Swede Hollow stories, and music courtesy of Joe Sanchelli.
The event was a great success with lots of great conversions and good food thanks to Andy Twedt, Morelli’s, Culver’s on Old Hudson Road, Rainbow on Arcade, and Cub in Sunray. Friends of Swede Hollow are already talking about next year’s “Watch the Glow”.

Watch the Glow 2006 - October 13th
The second annual “Watch the Glow of the Setting Sun on the Red Brick Brewery” event was held on Friday, October 13. It was a cool and cloudy evening. About twenty people stood at Swede Hollow Henge waiting and hoping that the sun would break through the clouds and do its magic on the red brick walls of the former Hamm’s Brewery. At this time of year the angle of the evening sun makes those bricks seem to glow. Josh McKrown, a Minneapolis Technical College student, spoke about the architecture of the Hamm’s Brewery and about the breweries in Milwaukee. Joe Sanchelli and his sister Nellie Mazunkiewicz shared stories from their youth in Swede Hollow.
The group finally gave up and moved to the picnic held in a nearby yard. There they were joined by other fans of Swede Hollow Park. Joe Sanchelli entertained everyone with music on his keyboard. The food was great in the cool evening air. The Culver’s Chili ready hit the spot.
Suddenly, the sun did break through to give a brief but spectacular show upon the 100+ year-old bricks before sinking below the horizon. Friends of Swede Hollow is already starting the planning for next year’s “Watch the Glow” event, which will be held in late September when the weather should be more cooperative.

The first annual “Watch the Glow of the Setting Sun on the Red Brick Brewery” (originally called the Hamm's Brewery Picnic) which was held in Swede Hollow on Friday, October 28th was a great success. The weather was good, the food was excellent, and everyone had a great time.
Planning for the evening started about a year and a half ago when Friends of Swede Hollow (FOSH) member Murph Dawkins returned home from a long business trip. To relax she walked into Swede Hollow as the sun set on the red brick buildings. The glow of the sun impressed her so much that she wanted everyone to experience it, so we started planning the event.
The evening started with around fifty people gathering at “Swede Hollow Henge” in Swede Hollow Park and watching the glow of the sun on the red brick brewery walls. People attending included Hamm’s Club members, who formerly worked at the Hamm’s Brewery; Joe Sanchelli who grow up in Swede Hollow; Friends of Swede Hollow members; and many neighborhood people. Murph spoke briefly about the glow of the sun on the red brick buildings. Carol Carey, Co-Chair of the Hamm’s Brewery Ad Hoc Advisory Committee, spoke about the work of the committee and the reuse of the brewery buildings.
Then as the sun set the picnic began with the Swede Hollow and the Saint Paul downtown skyline as a backdrop. Live music was provided by Joe Sanchelli and everyone had a wonderful time. The door prize was won by former Hamm’s employee Bill Daley. FOSH is planning to make this an annual fall event.
